How profit per order is calculated

Start with what the customer pays, take off every per-order cost, and multiply by volume.

  • Start

The order value the customer pays.

  • Subtract costs

    Product, shipping and payment fees.

  • Subtract ads

Your cost to win the order (CPA).

  • Monthly profit

Profit per order × orders per month.

Worked example: a $40 order
Order value
$40.00
− Product
$12.00
− Shipping
$6.00
− Fees (2.9% + $0.30)
$1.46
− Ads
$10.00
Profit per order
$10.54
At 300 orders a month that’s $3,162 before fixed costs.

How much does Shopify take per sale?

Shopify's cut comes in layers. Check your admin for your exact rates; they vary by plan and country.

FeeHow it worksWhere it goes in the calculator
Plan subscriptionA fixed monthly fee for your Shopify planSubtract from monthly profit
Payment processingA percentage plus a fixed amount per card paymentPayment fee % and fixed fee
Third-party gateway feeExtra percentage if you don't use Shopify PaymentsAdd to the payment fee %
AppsMonthly or usage-based app chargesSubtract from monthly profit

Shopify profit margin: gross, contribution and net

Three margins, each one lower than the last. Ads sit between contribution and net.

MarginWhat's subtractedOn a $100 order
Gross marginProduct cost$60.00 (60%)
Contribution margin+ shipping and payment fees$48.80 (49%)
Profit after ads+ ad cost per order ($25)$23.80 (24%)
Net margin+ fixed costs (apps, plan, staff)Lower again, across the month

Contribution margin sets the ROAS your ads must reach. Find it with the break-even ROAS calculator.

How many orders to cover your fixed costs

Profit per order pays for your plan, apps and staff. Divide those monthly costs by it to find your break-even point.

Break-even orders = monthly fixed costs ÷ profit per order. Anything above that number is profit for the business. If the answer is more orders than you can realistically sell, raise profit per order before you raise ad spend. The ROAS calculator shows whether your campaigns can carry that volume.

Worked example
Fixed costs per month
$1,500.00
÷ Profit per order
$10.54
Orders to break even
143
Plan, apps and part-time help. Every order after the 143th adds $10.54 of profit.

Where each order’s money goes

Five costs come out of every order. Ads are often the biggest one.

  • Product

Landed cost: the item plus freight and duties to your door.

  • Shipping

Postage and packing you pay, even when shipping looks free.

  • Payment fees

A percentage plus a fixed amount on each order.

  • Ads

Your CPA: what it costs to win this order.

  • Returns

Refunds and return shipping, spread across all orders.

  • Fixed costs

Apps, subscription and staff come out of the monthly total.

Ways to raise profit per order

Small changes to each cost add up across every order you ship.

  • Bundle products

Higher order value spreads shipping and fees.

  • Rethink shipping

Lighter packaging and a free-shipping threshold.

  • Lower your CPA

Fresh creative and real customer proof convert better.

  • Negotiate supply

Better terms at higher volume lower landed cost.

  • Cut returns

Clear sizing and honest videos reduce refunds.

  • Test prices

A small price rise often costs fewer sales than expected.

FAQ

Questions.

How do I calculate profit per order on Shopify?

Start with the order value and subtract product cost, shipping, payment processing fees and the ad cost of winning the order. What's left is your profit per order before fixed costs.

What payment fees does Shopify charge?

It depends on your Shopify plan, your country and whether you use Shopify Payments or another provider. Check the rates in your Shopify admin and enter them as a percentage plus a fixed fee per order.

Does this include my Shopify subscription and apps?

No. Those are fixed monthly costs. Subtract them, along with salaries and other overheads, from the monthly profit to see what the business keeps.

What is a good profit margin for an online store?

It varies a lot by category and price point. What matters most is that profit per order stays positive after ad costs, and that the monthly total covers your fixed costs.

Why is my profit so much lower than my gross margin?

Gross margin only removes product cost. Shipping, payment fees and especially ad costs come out afterwards, and together they often take more than the product itself.

How can I make each order more profitable?

Raise order value with bundles, cut shipping cost, lower your CPA with better creative and targeting, and review product costs with suppliers.

How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?

Shopify doesn't take a flat share. You pay a monthly plan fee, plus payment processing on each sale, whose rate depends on your plan and country. If you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify may add a transaction fee on top. At an example processing rate of 2.9% + $0.30, a $100 sale costs $3.20 in processing.

How much profit do you make on Shopify?

It depends entirely on your product margin, shipping and, above all, ad costs. Enter your numbers in the calculator: many stores find that ads, not product cost, decide whether an order is profitable.

Can you make $10k a month on Shopify?

Work backwards from profit per order. At $10.54 profit per order (the calculator's example), $10,000 a month needs about 949 orders. Raising profit per order to $20 halves that.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. A product that costs $60 and sells for $100 has a 40% margin but a 67% markup.

Should I include Shopify apps and the subscription in profit per order?

Keep them out of profit per order and subtract them from the monthly total instead. They are fixed costs: they don't grow with each order the way product, shipping, fees and ads do.
